On Wednesday, The Helipad team had the privilege of volunteering with Big Group Hub — an incredible grassroots organisation supporting some of our community’s most vulnerable children and families.

Big Group Hug works with over 350 amazing volunteers to collect and redistribute essential items like prams, cots, car seats, clothing and toys for children from newborn to 16 years, working through a network of 1,200 health and welfare professionals across 142 agencies.

In the past financial year alone, together they:
- Supported 7,734 babies and children
- Provided 139,284 essential items
- Delivered support valued at $2.7 million
- Saved 140+ tonnes of usable children’s items from landfill

We’re so grateful for all the work Big Group Hug does for our community. Thank you so much for having us @biggrouphug - it was a pleasure spending the morning with you and your amazing volunteers who welcomed us with open arms 🩵

This is a month overdue, but we wanted to say a HUGE thank you to Abbey. We've loved having you as part of our team over the past 2 years. Thank you so much for your generosity, dedication and compassion. We will miss your Taylor Swift insights, gym updates and daily announcements - we're still having trouble figuring out when to stop for lunch without you leading the way 🤣

We wish you all the best in your next chapter at @sunshinespeech_alliedhealth in Ballina who are so lucky to have you on their team!

There's been a few things happening at The Helipad! We said goodbye to Abbey at the end of 2025, who made the move up to Ballina. We're sure she is settling in to her new role at Sunshine Speech and Allied Health Services.

We welcomed Malinda to our team last week and she has hit the ground running, joining us in our decluttering and preparation for 2026!

We hope everyone has had a great start to the year.

It has already been 2 weeks since we celebrated the end of Anna’s chapter here at The Helipad. It has been an absolute pleasure having her on The Helipad team. We cannot thank her enough for her dedication, generosity and support to both our team and her families. Her hard work and kindness has made such a difference, we truly appreciate everything she's done! We can’t wait to see what she gets up to in her next chapter. We wish you all the very best Anna!! 🎉❤️

Dictation is a simple activity that will help learners solidify and generalise their spelling skills. Dictation tasks will also prepare them for note-taking in their later schooling years.

We tend to introduce dictation tasks once learners are able to spell some CVC words and are developing their fluency of this skill (we start with words in Unit 1 of the Sounds Write sequence). When we begin to work on dictation, we will say 1-2 words at a time and then give the next 1-2 words once the learner has written them down.

We use 2 minute timings in our dictation tasks.

Do you use dictation with your learners?
